Recipes

1/4 margarine 1 cup brown sugar (or white sugar plus 1 tablespoon molasses) 1/2 cup applesauce 2 cups pureed pumpkin or squash 1 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg 2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour 2 teaspoons baking soda

Preheat oven to 350 and grease muffin tin. Cream together margarine and sugar. Add applesauce, pumpkin, and spice. Mix well and add flour and soda.Fill muffin tins and bake for about 20-25 minutes.

This recipe makes12 muffins.

Notes: The muffins don't rise much, so don't be shy about piling the batter in. These muffins are great warm, but keep for days.

Lighter Sweet-Potato Muffins

3 cups flour

1-1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup sugar

1-1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

2 cups sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed

2 whole eggs

3 egg whites

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup low-fat buttermilk

1 cup applesauce

1/2 cup raisins

1/4 cup chopped nuts, toasted

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 24 muffin tins with paper liners, or coat with nonstick spray. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar and cinnamon. Mix well. In another bowl, combine the sweet potatoes, eggs, egg whites, vanilla, buttermilk and applesauce.

Mix well. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour the wet ingredients in. Add the raisins and nuts, and combine with as few strokes as possible, until all ingredients are just moistened.

Mix well. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour the wet ingredients in. Add the raisins and nuts, and combine with as few strokes as possible, until all ingredients are just moistened.

Fill the 24 prepared muffin cups with batter. Add 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar to the top of each muffin. Bake at 350 degrees for 22-25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks. Makes 24 muffins.

Plain Fritter Batter

1 cup flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

1 cup milk

  1. Sift dry ingredients together.

  2. Add beaten eggs and milk.3. Beat till smooth.

The fat should be deep enough to cover the fritters, and it should be smoking hot when used. At first, each fritter will sink to the bottom of the kettle. Then, as the heat starts the baking powder into action, and the dough begins to swell, it will rise to the surface and should be gently turned. Repeat turning until the fritter is finely colored. Most fritters are done within five minutes.

Apple Fritters

4 large apples, peeled, cored, and each cut into 4 slices

2 tablespoons sugar

1 teaspoon nutmeg

  1. Place slices of apple into of bowl with the sugar and nutmeg.

  2. Cover and set aside to steep for 2 hours.

  3. Dip each slice in plain fritter batter.

  4. Fry to light brown in hot grease.5. Serve with sugar.

Making Your Own Cleaning Products

Do you need a multi-purpose cleaner? Instead of buying 409®, why not mix up a bottle of homemade multi-purpose cleaner? In a spray bottle clearly marked, mix together equal parts water and white vinegar. This spray is effective, and costs much less than 409®.

You can also make an air freshener that will actually absorb odors rather than covering them up. In a bottle that will create a fine mist, combine two cups of hot water, one teaspoon of baking soda, and one teaspoon of vinegar. Shake the bottle to help the baking soda dissolve. If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, add a drop or two of any citrus essential oil. (Be sure to clearly mark your bottle.)

Everyone knows that hydrogen peroxide will clean out a wound, and that’s probably the only way most people will use it. Did you know, however, that it’s great for removing fresh blood on clothing? The same foaming action that draws the dirt out of a scrape will remove blood from a shirt or slacks.

You can also add hydrogen peroxide right into your washing machine when washing a load of whites. Pour a cup of hydrogen peroxide into the washing machine as it fills with water. Just make sure you don’t pour it directly onto your clothing because peroxide will act the same way as bleach.

For an effective disinfectant, mix together two teaspoons of borax, four tablespoons of vinegar, and three cups of hot water. While borax is NOT non-toxic, it is environmentally safe. Please be careful to label anything containing borax, and be careful how you store it.

Vinegar is known to cut grease and dirt, and is good as a disinfectant. You can use this mixture to clean windows, soap scum, mildew, tubs, and ceramic tiles. Add a drop or two of any essential oil of your choice to aid in the effectiveness of the cleaner. Do not, however, use vinegar on natural marble floors or counters.

Make Your Own Eco-Friendly Bathroom Cleaners

It has often been said that the toilet seat is one of the cleanest spots in the house. If you would like the rest of your bathroom to be as clean, it just takes a few homemade, eco-friendly cleaners to make that happen.

Hydrogen peroxide, a known germicidal agent, is considered one of the safest sanitizers you will ever find. It is composed of oxygen and water, and when it attacks organic materials, it breaks back down into its base components.

Everyone knows how effective hydrogen peroxide is in cleaning out a wound. That same bubbling action kills bacteria and viruses. So, if you are worried about bacteria or viruses in your shower, spray down the shower with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide as you exit it.

To keep your bathroom counters germ-free, keep a bottle of hydrogen peroxide where it’s easily accessible. After you’re finished cleaning, spray the counter tops to disinfect them.

Besides a water and hydrogen peroxide mixture, you can also use two common kitchen items – vinegar and baking soda, either combined or separate. By mixing together one-fourth cup baking soda in one-half gallon water, then adding one-half cup vinegar, you’ve made a great all-purpose cleaner. Use this immediately to clean any surface you would clean with a product like 409®.

Have you ever had a hair clog in the shower or the bathroom sink? If you have you can pour one-half cup of baking soda down the drain. Follow the baking soda with about one cup of vinegar. Step back because the mixture will fizz like a child’s volcano experiment. After a couple of minutes, add a mixture of boiling water and salt. The clog should go away, but you may have to repeat.

To clean your toilet bowl, sprinkle baking soda into the toilet and let it sit for a few minutes. Use your scrub your toilet with a toilet brush as usual. You can also pour a little distilled white vinegar into the toilet and letting it set for a few minutes before attacking the toilet with a toilet brush.

Have the tub and tiles in your bathroom or shower got you down? Clean them with a mixture of one and one-third cup baking soda, one-half cup liquid soap, one-half cup water, and two tablespoons of vinegar. Just rub the mixture on, use a little elbow grease to clean, and rinse well with plenty of warm water.

These are but a few of the basic, homemade, eco-friendly cleaners you can make to keep your bathroom clean and healthy for your family. Just remember that if you make one of these cleansers please be sure to clearly mark the container that holds the cleaner.

Our PRP Program

We have a FedEx ground program that I send you a pre-paid label and we ask for a donation of 10.00 to help cover a portion of the shipping charge from you to me. Yes, they pick up at your home at your convienence or you can leave it on your front porch and they will pick it up.

The 10.00 doesn't cover the entire cost we incur, but our auctions, raffles, other sales, private donations, goodsearch, Igive, searchandgive and other programs help pay our bills.

I send you the label you fill it out, place it on your box, call the 1-800 number to schedule a pick up at your home and they send it to me.

Your box must weigh at least 12-15 pounds to make it cost effective to use the program. The heavier it is the more cost effective. There is no time limit to use the label.

We started this program for those who can't afford their shipping, for those who are shut in and can't get out.

If you need a label, email me at:

oangels@hughes.net or oangels@gmail.com

You can paypal the 10.00 to:oafunds@hughes.netor you can snail mail it to:

Online Angels Mary Reinhart 36 Pine Drive Pottsville, PA 17901

or you can place it in an envelope in your box when you are ready to ship the box.

Since, the 10.00 is a donation we ask for to help us keep the program, your 10.00 is tax deductible.

We ask that you help us keep this program available to help those who need their boxes shipped. It is a wonderful program and we hope to be able to utilize it for a long time:)

thank you for supporting our PRP program!!!!!!!!!!!

Recipes Old Fashioned Doughnuts

3 cups flour

1/3 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg

2/3 cup sugar

1 small egg1 cup milk

1 tablespoon melted shortening

Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg.

Add the sugar.

Beat the egg lightly, add it to the milk and melted shortening. Blend with the dry ingredients to form a soft, light dough.

Roll our dough about a half an inch thick on a well-floured board.

Cut and drop each doughnut gently into hot oil or shortening, whichever you prefer.

Turn immediately, and when golden brown, lift from the hot grease with tongs and place on a layer of paper towels. You may want to line a baking pan with the paper towels to prevent greasy counter tops.

The doughnuts should take about 3 minutes to cook.

Peach Bread Pudding

Take 2 cups of breadcrumbs and pour a cup of hot water over them. When they are soft, add a cup of sugar and two eggs, well-beaten. Last of all, add one tablespoon of melted butter or margarine. Grease a baking dish well. Put in a layer of this bread mixture and on top of this, a layer of sliced and sweetened peaches, then another layer of bread and so on until the dish is full. Make sure the last layer is breadcrumbs. Bake at 350 for about 50 minutes or until the peaches are soft.

Old Fashioned Strawberry Sherbet

1 quart strawberries2 cups juice 2 pints water

1 pound sugar strained juice of

1 lemon

Mash the berries, or enough to make one pint of juice. Add the sugar to the mashed berries and let stand until dissolved. Add the other ingredients and press through a fine cheese-cloth or through a fruit press. Freeze.

Unclog a Drain Without Chemicals

If you haven’t used a commercial drain cleaning product recently, you might consider using this solution. All of these items would commonly be found in your kitchen.

Pour one-half cup of baking soda into your drain. Carefully pour one-half cup of vinegar over the baking soda and cover the drain, if at all possible. At this point, the two will begin bubbling just like a child’s volcano experiment for school. After a few minutes the bubbling should stop.

Pour at least a half gallon of boiling water over what’s left of the baking soda and vinegar. Then follow that with hot running water to flush it all down the drain. This process may have to be used more than once to clear the stubborn clog.

If after you’ve tried the vinegar and baking soda and the clog is still there, you have other options besides chemicals. Do you have a “snake?” This is a 25-50 foot metal wire with a bulb at the end. You push the snake into the drain. When it hits the blockage, you just keep twisting until the drain runs free.

So you’ve tried a plunger, vinegar and baking soda, boiling water, and a snake. What happens if your drain is still clogged? It might be time to bite the bullet and call a licensed plumber.

While home methods will sometimes work on the first or second try, there may be more of a problem than you realized.  It is at those times that you will want to allow a professional to take over. Not only will they be able to get your drains running again, they might save you a bigger problem in the future.
